TeraFlex Alpha HD Spare Tire Carrier
Not long after I did my lift and 35" tires, I realized the stock spare tire carrier was not up to the task. Jeep did a good job designing the stock carrier, and how well it works with the door. It will however, only be good to carry up to a 33" tire. It does not have the ability to adjust upward and outward to accommodate the size and weight of a larger tire/wheel combo.
I knew I wanted to keep my Hard Rock rear bumper, so I was not looking at new bumper/tire carrier combos. I wanted something that could replace the stock carrier and work with the ease and simplicity of what Jeep designed. After all, my wife will need to be swinging this open...it needs to work. This was my solution.
Teraflex Alpha HD Spare Tire Carrier
Alpha HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit
This is a great piece of engineering. TeraFlex identified that Jeep had engineered a lot of strength in the tub behind the hinges. This allowed then to engineer the carrier to attach in the factory location, keeping the ease of opening and closing the tailgate via the stock handle. The adjustable tire mount allows you move your new spare upward and inward to snug the spare tight against the carrier. This is key to quiet operation and reducing any chance of fatiguing the carrier structure.
This carrier has passed FCA's rigorous testing standards. The tire carrier is engineered to meet FEA validation and ASTM and SAE testing procedures. This is Chrysler's #1 preferred carrier. The Alpha HD is even offered in Jeeps Performance Line of products...how's that for an endorsement! Let's look at the specs.

Here's a walk through my install. I began this early evening, so pardon my pics!
We'll start by removing the stock carrier...
After you remove the hinges and door brackets, you will find unpainted sheet metal. This needs to be cleaned and painted before installation of the new Alpha carrier...
Installation is simply a matter of bolting the new TeraFlex carrier onto the Jeep using the factory mounting locations. Use a torque wrench and follow TeraFlex's recommend torque for the various bolts.
Here is the new Alpha carrier installed...
In this next photo, I was switching over to my new 37's. The Alpha carrier had been on Rubi for about a year and half, subjected to Chicago's brutal salty winter roads. I also wheeled in Moab with it for the first time. Take a close look at the carrier...it still looks new! The finish on it is top notch.
The Alpha carrier has been absolutely noise free. I've been running my 37" spare on it for about a year now. The door swings open and closes easily with one hand. The finish looks new. I really like the fact that there are pre-drilled threaded holes for additional accessories designed and built right into the carrier. I'm running TeraFlex's CB antenna mount on it, for a functional clean look.
TeraFlex provides rubber plugs to finish off unused threaded holes. I'm a big fan of getting the details right...
The Alpha HD is must upgrade for anyone who needs to carry a larger spare tire on their Jeep, and keep the ease and simple function of the factory tailgate open and close. I give this 5 stars...Bravo TeraFlex for designing, engineering and manufacturing such a great product!
The Alpha HD doing it's part keeping my 37" spare secure and quiet as we work our way up 'Hamburger Hill', Kane Creek...
